A new bill for submission to Australia’s Parliament.

AWPR has developed a bill requiring the government to comply with International Law in decisions on participation in armed conflict overseas

In association with the University of Sydney Law School’s Professor Emily Crawford, AWPR has developed a draft bill for submission to parliament.

The bill seeks to ensure compliance by the executive government with International Law whenever it makes a decision to deploy Australian Defence Force personnel in armed conflicts overseas.

The draft bill is designed not only to ensure compliance by the Australian government with International Law when committing Australians to participation in armed conflicts in foreign territories but also to establish transparency regarding such decisions.

The bill provides a basis on which executive governments can be accountable to the parliament and the people of Australia for the lawfulness of their decisions.

The text of the draft bill is available HERE
